PROPELLING WOMEN’S POLITICAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH SUSTAINABLE MENTORSHIP AND CAPACITY STRENGTHENING AT THE GRASS ROOTS LEVEL
The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) in partnership with UN Women
and Global Affairs Canada has been on a transformative journey, reaching communities
across Kenya with its impactful community engagement programs. From the arid plains of
Kajiado to the lush landscapes of Kericho, from the vibrant streets of Gilgil to the serene
settings of Embu and Uasin Gishu, KEWOPA has been steadfast in its goal of empowering
women into leadership roles.
In each of these communities, KEWOPA’s initiatives have sparked a wave of empowerment,
ambition and resilience among women from all demographics of life. Through a series of
trainings and interactive sessions, KEWOPA has provided women with the tools, knowledge,
and confidence to step into leadership positions and make their voices heard.
One of the key pillars of KEWOPA’s community engagement programs is civic education. By
organizing informative sessions on topics such as leadership skills, political participation, and
governance, KEWOPA aims to equip women with the necessary knowledge to navigate the
complexities of leadership. These sessions also serve as platforms for networking and
mentorship, connecting aspiring female leaders with experienced mentors who can provide
guidance and support along their journey.
In addition to education, KEWOPA places a strong emphasis on advocacy and representation.
By actively engaging with local communities and stakeholders, KEWOPA advocates for
policies and initiatives that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. Through its
presence in counties such as Kajiado, Homa Bay, Kericho, Gilgil, Embu, and Uasin Gishu,
KEWOPA amplifies the voices of women, ensuring that their concerns and aspirations are
heard at both the local and national levels.
Furthermore, KEWOPA’s community engagement programs are not just about empowering
individual women; they are about transforming communities as a whole. By providing a
platform for effective women participation in leadership through legislation, oversight and
representation, KEWOPA is laying the groundwork for sustainable change and progress.
As we reflect on the journey of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association and its
community engagement programs, one thing is clear: the future is bright for women in
Kenya. With associations like KEWOPA leading the way, we can look forward to a future
where women stand to shape the destiny of our nation.
