KEWOPA, in partnership with Uraia and with support from the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia, convened women leaders, youth representatives, civil society organizations, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), electoral stakeholders, local administrators, and community leaders in Uasin Gishu County for a dialogue on enhancing inclusive electoral governance through women and youth led advocacy and policy engagement.<\/p>\n
The forum focused on strengthening public participation, promoting women’s leadership, supporting balanced nominations within political parties, addressing violence in politics, and confronting the growing challenge of femicide. Participants examined the barriers that continue to limit the participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups in political and governance processes and explored practical solutions to promote inclusion and accountability.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the engagement, Senator Prof. Margaret J. Kamar emphasized the importance of peaceful and inclusive electoral processes, noting that elections are a democratic exercise through which citizens choose their leaders and should be free from violence. She called for the creation of a political environment where women, youth, and marginalized groups can participate fully in leadership and governance.<\/p>\n
The discussions underscored the need for stronger civic engagement, responsive political parties, and institutions that uphold democratic values and equal participation. Participants also highlighted the importance of creating safe civic spaces that enable meaningful engagement by all citizens throughout the electoral cycle.<\/p>\n
The forum reaffirmed the critical role of women and youth in shaping Kenya’s democratic future and called for collective action to promote peaceful elections, strengthen accountability, reject political violence, and expand opportunities for inclusive leadership.<\/p>\n
As the country approaches the next electoral period, stakeholders committed to working together to advance electoral governance that is participatory, peaceful, and representative of all citizens.<\/p>\n
