EMPOWERING BUDGET CHAMPIONS IN BUSIA COUNTY: A FORUM FOR CHANGE
In a significant step towards fostering transparency and inclusivity in budgeting, KEWOPA, in partnership with the Institute of Public Finance, held an impactful forum in Busia County. The event, graced by the honorable Hon. Mary Emaase Otucho, aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills regarding the budget process and the importance of women’s empowerment in these discussions.
The forum brought together a diverse group of participants, including COP members, representatives from various women’s groups, and women rights organizations (WROs). This gathering underscored the commitment to ensuring that women’s voices are not only heard but actively integrated into decision-making processes.
Participants engaged in extensive training sessions covering critical topics such as budget oversight, formulation, gender-responsive budgeting, and women empowerment. These sessions were designed to create a new generation of budget champions who can advocate for equitable budgeting practices in their communities. The training emphasized practical strategies for analyzing budgets through a gender lens, ensuring that resources are allocated to address the unique needs of women and marginalized populations.
Hon. Mary Emaase Otucho emphasized the importance of public participation in budget processes. She urged all attendees to take an active role in engaging with their local governments, ensuring that budget allocations reflect the needs and priorities of all community members. By encouraging attendees to voice their concerns and proposals, she reinforced the idea that public participation is vital for fostering accountability and responsiveness in governance.
With their newly acquired skills and knowledge, these budget champions are now tasked with the responsibility of training others in their communities. This is essential for amplifying the impact of the forum, creating a network of informed advocates who can promote transparency, accountability, and gender responsiveness in budgeting.
As the participants return to their communities, they carry with them not just knowledge but a sense of responsibility to advocate for inclusive budgeting practices. The collaboration between KEWOPA and the Institute of Public Finance represents a pivotal step toward a more equitable future in Busia County, where every voice matters in shaping public policy.
Through ongoing efforts to foster an environment of engagement and inclusivity, we can pave the way for a brighter future for Busia County and beyond. The impact of this training will extend far beyond the event itself, as these budget champions rise to the challenge of advocating for their communities. With continued commitment and collaboration, we can ensure that everyone has a seat at the budgeting table. Together, we are working towards a more equitable society, where the needs and aspirations of all citizens are acknowledged and addressed.
