KEWOPA CHAMPIONS WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IN MERU COUNTY
The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) recently conducted a transformative training session in Meru County, focusing on public participation, disability rights, civic engagement, and leadership with integrity. The forum provided a platform for participants to gain valuable insights, share their experiences, and discuss the challenges they face in leadership and governance.
Hon. Elizabeth Kailemia graced the event, delivering a powerful message that urged women to step forward with confidence and take up leadership roles while upholding integrity. She highlighted the importance of women’s participation in politics and governance, emphasizing that women in Meru are now realizing their potential to run for political positions. “Women of Meru did not know that they have the confidence to vie for political positions. Now, they feel empowered and ready to take up the challenge,” she stated. She further called on men to support women’s leadership, recognizing that inclusivity in governance leads to more progressive and equitable communities.
One of the key discussions during the forum was the rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide, a crisis that has sparked national concern. Hon. Kailemia strongly condemned these injustices, stressing the need for collective action to protect women and ensure justice for victims. Participants engaged in discussions on strategies to prevent GBV, support survivors, and push for stronger policies to safeguard women’s rights.
The training session was filled with inspiring stories from women striving to make a difference in their communities. From grassroots activists to aspiring political leaders, women shared their journeys of overcoming challenges and breaking barriers in male-dominated spaces. The discussions reinforced KEWOPA’s commitment to equipping women with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to participate in governance and decision-making.
KEWOPA’s work in Meru County is part of a larger mission to increase women’s representation in leadership at national and county levels. Through such training sessions, more women are becoming aware of their rights, their capabilities, and the opportunities available for them in politics and governance.
As the training concluded, participants expressed gratitude for the insights gained and affirmed their readiness to engage in leadership roles. The forum marked another step towards a future where women’s voices lead the way in shaping policies, governance, and community development. KEWOPA remains committed to amplifying women’s voices, strengthening leadership capacities, and advocating for policies that promote gender equality and inclusivity across Kenya.
