KEWOPA CHAMPIONS WOMEN’S LAND RIGHTS FOR AN INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Women across Kenya continue to face systemic barriers in accessing and owning land, even though they are disproportionately affected by challenges such as gender-based violence and the worsening effects of climate change. Limited access to land undermines their economic independence, weakens household resilience, and restricts their ability to contribute fully to community development.
Recognizing these persistent gaps, the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to championing legal and policy reforms that secure women’s land rights. The association is working closely with Parliament, government agencies, civil society organizations, and regional bodies such as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to advance this agenda.
A key part of KEWOPA’s initiative is empowering grassroots women through awareness creation and capacity building. By equipping women with the knowledge and tools to claim and defend their land rights, KEWOPA is ensuring that progress is not only driven at the policy level but also anchored in local communities where the impact is most felt.
The association also acknowledges that land rights cannot be addressed in isolation. Integrating gender perspectives into land governance while promoting climate resilience is central to building a more inclusive future. KEWOPA is fostering collaboration with youth caucuses and other stakeholders to ensure that land management systems are equitable, sustainable, and responsive to emerging global challenges.
By driving reforms and strengthening partnerships, KEWOPA is paving the way toward a future where women have secure land rights, communities are more resilient, and development is shared equitably across society.
