INCLUSIVE AND ISSUE BASED LEADERSHIP STRENGTHENS DEMOCRACY IN SAMBURU COUNTY

Inclusive and issue-based leadership is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy, ensuring that all voices are heard and reflected in public decision making. This principle guided a recent town hall meeting held in Samburu County under the theme “Promoting Issue Based Politics in Kenya,” which brought together women, youth, and community leaders for an open and constructive dialogue on leadership, participation, and governance.

The forum was graced by Hon. Pauline Lenguris, County MP for Samburu County, who emphasized the importance of citizen engagement in shaping policies and setting county priorities. She encouraged residents to actively attend public participation forums and take ownership of development processes within their communities. Hon. Lenguris also called on women to step forward and vie for leadership positions, noting that their perspectives and experiences are critical to building responsive and inclusive governance. She urged men to support and champion women’s leadership as a shared responsibility in strengthening democratic institutions.

Participants at the town hall reflected on the progress made through constitutional protections and policy frameworks aimed at promoting equality and inclusion. However, they also highlighted persistent gaps in awareness, enforcement, and community engagement. Many noted that limited access to civic education and a lack of safe and supportive spaces for women and young people continue to hinder meaningful participation in public life.

The discussions underscored the need for sustained collaboration between leaders and citizens to build trust and accountability. Community members called for continuous civic education programs that demystify governance processes and empower residents to engage confidently in public forums. They also emphasized the importance of creating environments where women and youth can express their views without fear, ensuring that development priorities reflect the needs of all segments of society.

The town hall was held in partnership with the Centre for Multiparty Democracy under the Kenya Institutional Strengthening Program funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through Elgia Africa. Through this collaboration, the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association continues to advance citizen engagement, strengthen women’s political participation, and promote issue-based politics that prioritize accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery.

As communities across the country work toward more inclusive governance, forums such as the Samburu County town hall play a vital role in bridging the gap between citizens and leaders. By fostering open dialogue and collective problem solving, they contribute to a political culture that is grounded in issues, driven by participation, and focused on building a more equitable and democratic Kenya.
